Hormone Therapy:
Introduction
Fluctuations in female hormone levels can occur throughout a
woman's life. Although perimenopause (time around menopause) is the most
frequent time for these fluctuations, there are many other situations and
conditions that cause hormonal changes, including functional ovarian
cysts, thyroid conditions, certain medications, diabetes and insulin
resistance, poly-cystic ovarian syndrome, anovulation, pregnancy and the
postpartum period, exercise habits and diet, changes associated with the
menstrual cycle, and oral contraceptive use. Patients may exhibit
symptoms such as insomnia, sweats, hot flashes, mood swings, depression,
irritability, and changes in libido.
Treatment
Treatment is based on the cause or causes of the hormonal
imbalance. Management options include: observation, lifestyle
modifications, changes in medications or medication dosages, hormonal
supplementation, and potential change in contraceptive method
altogether. Small changes can bring about big changes in the management
of hormone imbalance.
Menopausal Management
Introduction
Menopause and perimenopause (time around menopause) are a time of
great fluctuation and eventual decline in the levels of the female
hormones. This decline affects the body in a variety of ways: hot
flashes, night sweats, insomnia, vaginal dryness and possible pain with
intercourse, depression and mood swings, and a decrease in bone
strength.
Treatment
Effective management of menopausal symptoms is achieved through a
combination of treatment modalities, such as lifestyle changes
(including dietary and exercise modifications) and hormonal and medical
therapies. These therapies are selected based on the individual symptoms
of a patient and tailored to achieve optimal results.
